THE READING PLAN (FEBRUARY)
Our reading in January has in the Old Testament, taken us from Creation through Pharaoh finally asking Moses to 'take God's people' out of Egypt, a fulfillment of a prophecy of God (all of Genesis and thru chapter 14 of Exodus). In the New Testament, we read about Jesus' genealogy, have reviewed many prophecies about the coming of Jesus being fulfilled, saw Jesus in action with healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, and much more, have read many great stories, parables, and teachings, and have reached the point where Jesus has entered Jerusalem as He enters the final portion of his earthly ministry. In Psalms and Proverbs, so wonderfully inspiring verses have been highlighted and great advice and life lessons received, with many more to come.

THE READING PLAN (MARCH)
Our reading in February has, in the Old Testament, taken us from God's chosen people taken out of Egypt and experiencing God first hand while in the desert, where God, through Moses, is providing them important instructions as to how they should worship and treat each other, as God takes them to the Promised Land. In the New Testament, we read for the first time about the sacrifice that Jesus made for all humans, giving up His life for us, spilling His blood, as the ultimate sacrifice, so that all that believe can have the opportunity of eternal life with Jesus and God. We then moved into the second book of the New Testament, Mark, where we get a view from the ministry and life of Jesus, from Mark, not one of the twelve apostles, but who after following Peter throughout his ministry, wrote down all that he [Mark] under the inspiration of Holy Spirit felt was important for us to know about on this day, 1000's of years later. In Psalms and Proverbs, some wonderfully inspiring verses have been highlighted and great advice and life lessons received, with many more to come.

THE READING PLAN (APRIL)
Our reading in March has, in the Old Testament, taken us from Leviticus, where God, through Moses, was providing Moses the 'laws, regulations, and rule of law that this new young nation needed to follow because one thing that is certain, had they not been already doing all of the things that 'rules and regulations' needed to be instituted for, God would not have instituted them, right? As we moved through the remained of Leviticus, chapter 26 and 27 are especially important to keep in mind as we continue through our reading in this year together. We then moved into and through Numbers and here we have the 'first census' of this young nation recorded indicating that these people that were being led through the desert and into the 'Promised Land' was at least 2m people strong. In Numbers, how it is that the Israelites as a nation were to march through the desert and carry the Tent of Meeting, and the Ark of the Covenant, which contained inside the 2 stone tablets that are the '10 Commandments' while the 'rules and regulations that pertain largely to what has to happen if one of the 10 Commandments were 'broken' we on the outside of the Ark of the Covenant. Additionally, in Numbers, the duties and responsibilities of Aaron and his sons, and the Levites generally, were defined. Working our way through the rest of Numbers, more advice, direction, rules and regulations, or more details on what had already been said by God through Moses is found. We then have a few more times where Moses has to plead with God to please not give up on these Israelites, and by the time that we hit Numbers chapter 13, we find that because of the lack of trust that 10 out of 12 'spies' that went to explore the 'Promised Land', the Israelites were to remain in the desert for 40 years, basically, so that the generation that was there, that did not trust in God, even after all 2m+ of them seeing first hand all that God had done, did not trust that God would actually be with them as they took over the Promised Land. In Numbers chapter 20 though, second only to Jesus' torture, crucifixion, and death, we find Moses in total frustration with these Israelites, and not doing what God had instructed, and since no one is 'above the law' or God, Moses is told that he and Aaron who was also party to that mistake would not see the Promised Land. In the final chapters, God gives this young nation a victory over an adversary that elected to fight against God and lost, and we come across the first 'prophet' that is living in a foreign land, indicating to me that God had tried and failed, else He would not be using the Israelites to pass judgment, to have the people living in the Promised Land or the surrounding areas to 'return to Him'. Concluding the book of Numbers, we read about a 2nd census, and how the Promised Land would be divided among the Israelites, more rules and regulations are provided to them by God through Moses, a deal that is done with the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh (one of the sons of Joseph), a great 'play-by-play' of what their route was through the desert. We then started the book of Deuteronomy and are still in, which literally means the 're-telling' of all the rules and regulations and case laws, festivals, sacrifices, etc.., and here we find Moses, now in his last days of his life, 're-telling' all and reinforcing over and over to please please be faithful to God, with a serious emphasis on not worshiping idols or anything other than the god that created everything that would even be used in order to create something that would be 'worshiped' in the first place, a God that could not do what the God of Israel, and our Creator and Father in heaven on this day, could possibly do for them.
In the New Testament, we picked up our reading in Mark, who was a disciple of Peter, and just really liked how Mark just writes down what he had heard Peter say repeatedly to those that he met with so much passion throughout his life. We then read through for the second time, and from a different perspective, what the last days of Jesus' ministry on this earth looked like, and Mark ends his book with the ascension of Jesus to heaven, and they, the disciples, "going out and proclaiming the message 'EVERYWHERE', and God working with them". We then moved into the book of Luke where we find ourselves today, and we get a great view of the life and ministry of Jesus from Luke's perspective, who I love in the beginning of his book says that "HE WAS A WITNESS OF ALL THAT IS WRITTEN HERE', meaning, that Luke was an eye-witness.
In Psalms and Proverbs, some wonderfully inspiring verses have been highlighted and great advice and life lessons received, with many more to come.

Our reading in April has, in the Old Testament, taken us from Deuteronomy, where we found God through Moses continuing to provide in greater detail the 'Instructions' as to how this young nation of Israel was to govern itself, all the way to where the Israelites, through the choices they made, were found in a downward and dangerous cycle of turning their back from God, then asking for help but never really repenting, but God still showing up by sending 'Judges' or 'leaders' that would help them regain their land, and in our reading of Judges, we were taken through the 7th leader that God rose up.
The story in between Deuteronomy and Judges though was one of God trying to provide the 'Instructions' to a people that were to make up a new nation that God was forming while in the desert. While on this journey, Moses dies and the power was handed over to Joshua, Joshua then through the trusting he had in God lead the 2m+ strong nation through the Jordan River, AGAIN PARTED AND MADE DRY BY GOD, where Joshua, when God was with him and the Israelite army, was able to go into 'judgment battles' where the people that had been living in this Promised Land, who God after over a period of 100's of years trying to get to those people to 'return to Him' by sending prophets with very specific warnings, only to disregard those 'prophecies and warnings'. So, just as God had told Moses, the 'Promised Land' was not being given to the Israelites just because they were a 'better people' as they too were 'detestable at times to God', but because those people were 'worse than them' and God had promised Abraham that this land, who was conditional on the Israelite nation being in a 'relationship with God', would be given to his [Abraham's] descendants. Well, while in the process of taking over the Promised Land, we find the Israelites already making some bad choices, but it is not until Joshua dies and the Israelites were left without a leader, that we are told that the Israelites 'did whatever they wanted as they had no king'. Thus, God in our reading of Judges, has to send 'leaders' or 'judges' to bring them back after they had turned their back on God and through their bad choices end up being harshly treated by the people that God specifically warned they should no co-mingle, co-marry with, or adopt their detestable worship methods and 'gods'. There is a lot more to talk about in our reading of the Old Testament, but as we move into May, the main theme that we are seeing is that bad choices made by us cannot be expected to have good results, but that God will intervene when we ask, but that does not always mean that the consequences of the bad choices won't remain until some future date or for as long as we live.
As we move through the New Testament, in April we completed the Gospel of Luke and started on the last day of April the book of John, which unlike the New Testament books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, which were written to teach people of how Jesus lived and to convince them that Jesus was the Messiah, was targeted to those who already believed that Jesus was the Messiah and now being persecuted for their conviction, needed a 'boost' to re-assure them that the choice they had made was sound and Bible based and that Jesus, and God, were counting on them carrying the good news message to the world so that future generations, we on this day, can be saved by the grace that Jesus provides through his death at the cross.
In Psalms and Proverbs, some wonderfully inspiring verses have been highlighted and great advice and life lessons received, with many more to come.

THE READING PLAN (JUNE)
Starting with our Old Testament reading, during the month of May we complete the book of Joshua, Ruth, 1 Samuel, and a little more than half of the 2 Samuel, and the underlying theme in Joshua is that as humans depart from the relationship with God, and turn their backs on God, and make bad choices, that these bad choices when compounded, can result in really bad things happening, and this is the case with Samson, who was not only a 'nazrene' but the 11th Judge of Israel, the Levi priest that we are introduced to, the townspeople that end up doing a terrible thing to the Levi priest's secondary wife, the decision made by the elders of Benjamin who failed to hand over the men that did the terrible thing to the Levi's priests secondary wife, ultimately leading (decision compounded) almost to the total annihilation of one of Israel's 12 Tribes.
However, as we move into the book of Ruth, hope is reborn and we see the good choices, made by righteous people,
result in good things happening, and in the case of the 'good choices' made in Ruth, we are witness to the birth of Jesse, who ultimately becomes the father of David, who will read becomes the 2nd king of Israel, and even the family tree by which Jesus is born from.
As we complete 1 Samuel and complete more than half of 2 Samuel, we are introduced to the prophet Samuel, who has the sad task of witnessing the Israelites preferring to have an 'earthly flawed individual' become their king, versus the God of the universe. Once the decision is made by the people that they want an 'earthly king' like the other nations around them, God tells them that they are making a mistake, but through Samuel, works to find the first king of Israel, who ends up being Saul. But, although Saul starts off as a promising figure, he quickly through power, reliance on himself, and just turning from God, although through Samuel he was told that God himself had chosen him to be Israel's first king, ends up turning from God, even at the end of his life, going to a median, which is 'detestable to God'. Well, eventually a 2nd king has to be found, and David, the youngest son of Jesse, who was introduced in the book of Ruth, becomes king, but only after Saul, defying God's decision itself, tries to have David killed, ultimately though, Saul's life and those of his sons ending abruptly. Well, David takes the reigns and even though David is known as someone that would constantly 'seek God' and wanted to 'remain in relationship with God', makes a few big mistakes of his own, but always realizing that he made a mistake, asking God for forgiveness. So, by the time we close off our reading for the month of May in 2 Samuel, we find David on the run from his oldest son Absalom, who has made some bad choices of his own, and who is still alive because David made some bad choices regarding Absalom himself, who has just taken over the kingdom in a coup.
As we move over to the New Testament reading, we spend the entire month in the 4th book of the New Testament, 90% different from the first three books (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), and there is little doubt that the Book of John was not authored by John the apostle of Jesus. From historical records, John was probably written after John moved from Jerusalem to Ephesus in his later years, probably around AD66, 4 years before the Romans per the prophesy of Jesus (and Daniel as we will discover), predicted that Jerusalem, and especially the Temple that symbolized 'God's presence among the Israelites' being totally destroyed by the Romans in AD70. While in Ephesus, John becomes an important church leader there, and ends up writing this book of John later in his life, and John writes this book as an eye witness to all that had happened to Jesus. John, who of course would have known that a lot had already been written about the account of Jesus and His ministry, wanted to provide a different perspective, and writes this book of John as sort of telling us and everyone that has read this book over the span of time, ‘the rest of the story’. So, as we read John, it was encouraging to visualize John himself just telling us the story of what he had seen, and feeling the passion from time to time in the pages of what he wrote, retelling the stories about Jesus, stories that had shaped his life, stories that grew sweet with age, told to us by someone who was a friend of Jesus.
In Psalms and Proverbs, some wonderfully inspiring verses have been highlighted and great advice and life lessons received, with many more to come.
